With Nest Protect walking the Google plank, I can’t help but wonder if there is any interest in building an open smoke/co detector. Before I get into this, yes I know there are liability and insurance issues, but frankly, I feel like a directly connected, ESPHome based system would be more reliable than anything else out there. My Nests frequently have troubles connecting to the wifi and each other. Owl is slightly better than Nest, but expensive.
With all my smoke detection locations powered by mains AC, it seems possible that these devices could do much more than just smoke & co detection. Think about:
- Dual smoke detection with HIS-07 ionization and MQ7 optical sensors
- CO, CO2, VOC, PM2.5 sensors
- Temperature
- Humidity
- Motion, presence
- Audio in and out
- Ambient light
- LED RGB status lighting with optional path lighting at night
- Camera
- Modularity for easy replacement of bad/aged sensors and being able to option any of the choices
I’m dangerous enough when it comes to wiring up a custom ESPHome sensor setup, but this would require things like pcb design and enclosure modeling. Any interest in collaborating on this?
