Not really a project yet, but an idea that I’m really interested in testing out. My wife sleeps during the day because she works the night shift, and our bedroom gets hot, even in the winter. It’s a good 8-10 degrees hotter than the rest of the house, because of the big double window. We use blackout curtains which helps with the brightness, but they radiate heat when they are blocking full sun from about 10am - 3pm.
Because the outside temperature is often 30+ degrees lower than inside, I thought perhaps I could find something to open and close the window a little bit to help control the temperature, because our “Smart” thermostat won’t let me set the AC low enough for it to kick on.
Turns out there’s not really a great solution. There are lots of options for fold out or horizontal sliding windows, but not really for a single hung window like ours. Plus the windows won’t stay open, they just fall closed.
So my idea for something completely damage free and removable is to try using an air shim to hold the window open a few inches. If it works, I’d just have to figure out a way to automate the inflating and deflating process. Still going down that rabbit hole. I’d love any ideas or input on alternatives or methods to use HA to inflate or deflate an air shim based on the temperature reading from the sensor in the room.
