Opinions: Hardware boot and storage options (pi3, pi4, m.2, HDD, SSD)

So. I feel that my install has become a bit… crippled… and feel that I should maybe rebuild from scratch but looking towards a non-SD based install. Feeling a rebuild coming I’m hesitant to invest too much time adding new devices and configuring customizations and automations…

What I have-

  • I think all my Pi3’s are doing things I’d prefer to not take them away from… but I have a local brick-and-mortar source and could go pick up a 4 tomorrow.
  • Pi addon for an m.2 drive and a spare m.2 card. think it’s 128gb…
  • Pi addon for a 2.5" HDD or SSD and a 160gb HDD. though SSD prices are such that I could pick one of those up when I go get the Pi4…

My options:

  1. keep waiting for the pi4 and Hass to support pure USB-boot
  2. go get a 4 and settle for a hybrid SD/m.2
  3. go get a 4 and settle for a hybrid SD/HDD
  4. go get a 4 and a SSD for a hybrid SD/SSD
  5. repurpose the pi3 of my current install for a SD/m.2 hybrid
  6. repurpose the pi3 of my current install for a SD/HDD hybrid

Thoughts?
