From your graph it looks like your unit never went to sleep. They need about 3.8V to operate normally with WIFI. WIFI use drives spikes in the measured voltage as seen early in your graph. If the processor drops below 3.3V it browns out.
The red light should show when its charging. It goes out when the battery is full. When its awake and connected to WIFI it will be blue.
You want to get through the valve calibration before doing anything else.
Once you can get back into the web UI on the landing page find the build number and pass that along to.
On another note, when the web UI has an open client the system stays awake.
The current default inactivity and sleep durations are 5min / 5min. Once I get mine setup I switch that from the HA irrigoto dashboard device tab to 1min for inactivity and 10min for sleep time. That works well for me. I’ve not needed to connect a charger since installation and they don’t get sun everyday or all day.

Ahhh, didn’t realize it stayed active while there was a browser session connected. Makes sense though. When I put my desktop to sleep yesterday, it still had the web UI open. And I may have still had it as an open tab on my cellphone browser. Noted.

I’m not seeing a red LED with the power connected, even after ~90 minutes connected to the charger. Maybe I’ll take it outside and let it sit in the sunlight to recharge for the rest of the afternoon. Hopefully the unit didn’t brick.

Highly unlikely bricked or corrupted. Most likely stuck in boot loop until power gets high enough. Boot looping could be slowing the charging also. I’m not sure but I think these charge faster with full sun then on the adapter. It may stay in the boot loop until you force a reset with the momentary power switch. I would let it charge overnight. When you get back to calibration have a full charge. Not required but good practice when trying to resolve issues.

Left it in full sunlight for about 7 hours yesterday, then brought inside to charge overnight. Still not seeing any LED activity, even after flipping the power switch, and it’s not showing up as active in ESPHome. No luck responding to the chip-id command with the UART cable connected, with or without the charger plugged in.

I’m moving the charger to a smart plug that measures voltage and current draw now, so I’ll have data to see if it’s actually drawing any power shortly.

Update

The charger is consuming about 0.02 amps and roughly 2 watts right now. For reference, the Oto’s charger is rated at 12V / 0.5A

To serve as a control, I have an identical smart plug sitting next to it that’s also powered on with nothing connected. The control is drawing 0 A / 0 W, as expected.

Gonna let it stay on the charger all day again today and try again tomorrow morning.

How do I know if my battery is dead?

If you turn the switch (or press the button, depending on your hardware) and the status light does not light up, the battery is dead. Charge the device for a minimum of 24 hours using the provided wall adapter before trying again. Ensure the status light is red while plugged it to be sure it is receiving charge.

:index_pointing_up:IMPORTANT: If the battery is completely dead, do not attempt to charge the device on solar alone. Doing so could damage the battery itself. Bring the OtO inside and charge it using the provided wall charger.

And here’s a second support doc, specifically about recovery after full battery discharge:

Plug in the device using the provided power cable and ensure it is plugged in for at least 24 hours.

You know if the device is charging successfully because the LED light will glow solid red (note, it may take some time for the LED to turn on if the battery has been dead for an extended period of time).

Note: If the battery is dead, the device will not get enough power from the sun alone. We suggest you plug it in for 24 hours so you can work with a full charge.

I’ll give it a full 24hrs on the charger before trying anything else. My Oto’s BOM is 6014-R.

Thomas since you are familiar with Claude. Connect the UART cable and ask Claude to monitor the port. The UART cable is powered by your PC and your Oto should be putting stuff out the UART port even if its boot looping. Worst case you can put it back in boot mode holding the boot button and toggling the power switch.
0.02A @ 115V is seems low. What does your power monitor measure when the adapter is not connected but plugged into AC?
The red LED is controlled by hardware independent of the ESP32. When the ESP32 firmware is running it can override the LED setting it to other colors or shutting it off.

No activity yet, even after toggling the power switch. Also nothing when attempting to put it back in bootloader mode.

I set up an identical power switch (with nothing attached to it) next to the one with the charger to act as a control. Both power switches draw 0A / 0W with nothing connected.

HA is showing the charger’s power consumption dropped to zero about an hour ago ~10:30am while I was in work meetings. You can see where I first connected Oto to the smart switch around 9:20am:

I was thinking your Oto charger may have a small draw with no power going out of it to your Oto. The fact that you’ve seen no red LED and your not getting any response from the UART suggests that the battery is depleted and its not getting charged. You mentioned that you put it out in the sun, while it was in the sun did you see a red LED?

Didn’t see any red LEDs while in the sun, unfortunately. And I agree: I don’t think 0.02A is sufficient to trickle charge much of anything substantial.

Please accept my my apology for your difficulties.
Do you have a multimeter to check the voltage output of your Oto charger? It is quite difficult to measure at the end of the charge cable however, if you disconnect the cable from the adapter at the adapter end you can get to the adapter pins. It should measure ~12VDC. I just measured 11.65VDC on mine. I also measured less than 10mA current at the 115VAC end when there is no Oto attached (unloaded, measured with an ammeter). Its possible your charger, charge cable or connection is faulty. That doesn’t explain why you saw no red LED when it was out in the sun.

hey @rob-farrellrobotics I am about to do new seed on my lawn, I am wondering if at this point your custom firmware is good enough for this? is there any video somewhere of how it works with your gentle spray mode?

I’m definitely not a grass or lawn expert. How gentle you need to water new seed is a very subjective subject. Some will say that if the water moves the seeds it may inhibit their growth or grow uneven patches. If you are not going to have any rain for a couple weeks then you can certainly put down a more gentle spray with a hose or another type sprinkler.
I’ve tuned some watering modes to have the Oto move its nozzle quickly but the nozzle is what it is and it does generate a stream of water. Where I’m located we mix our seed with top soil and cover with straw and that keeps the moisture in, the birds and the direct sun out and it helps keep the seedlings in place.
As far as a video goes, I haven’t posted one. I would say it is similar to Oto’s original watering , it moves bit faster in some modes. From testing I would say that the irrigoto firmware delivers more accurate and even watering at least with my water system which is well driven.
I purchased my first Oto almost 3 yrs ago and my spouse, who is an accomplished gardener, just this year has decided that the Oto can water her plants. She tells me that it waters no harder than the rain. She was unconvinced until I started running the new firmware. I think she would avoid rain and the Oto with seedlings though.
