Outdoor motion sensor mounted on outdoor wooden ceiling - Preferably Z-wave and black

Hi,

My current setup is like this: I have a Fibaro single switch 2 (FGS-213) which is connected to a momentary switch to turn on/off the outdoor lightt. Now, I want to extend this setup with a motion sensor to reach the following behavior:

  • At night, the motion detection is automatically enabled
  • When motion is detected, the lights turn on for at least x minutes after the most recent motion event
  • Momentary switch can always be used to turn on/off the lights (so even if motion was detected and assuming no new motion events are incoming, then the lights can be turned of manually)

For this, I’m looking for the proper hardware, preferably with the following requirements:

  • Suitable for outdoor use, but mounted underneeth a covered area (no direct rain)
  • Can be mounted discretely on an outdoor wooden ceiling (may be built-in), so no wall-mount
  • Black finishing
  • Z-Wave interfacing (I currently don’t have any Zigbee devices)

Mechanics-wise, I think a Z-Wave version of such a device would be ideal:
Vorin Asimo

I hear a lot about the new Matter interface, so I’m not sure if I should take this into account when selecting this device…

Another option I thought of, was to use a Fibaro Double Switch 2 (FGS-223) and connect the output of a classic motion detection device to the second input of the Fibaro Double Switch and have this trigger the necessary automation. However, I’m not sure if it’s OK to use a Fibaro Double Switch without a load connected to it, also this would require an additional physical wire, which I’m not sure yet if that is available…

Any advice in selecting the proper components is much appreciated…

You just need an outdoor motion detector with lux level :man_shrugging:. The beauty of HA is the protocol does not matter.

That’s indeed the type of sensor I need, I was however hoping for some specific model recommendation…

I know you said z-wave but as it’s cheap enough to add zigbee maybe worth a shout.

We use the hue outdoor motion sensor which is black and so far it’s been rock solid for battery and reliability when dark. It exposes light level as well so is really useful for indoor lighting automations based on our actual light level locally.

The only thing I had issue with is false triggering events during daylight hours but we simply switch them off during daylight now.

I would go for the Zigbee route. And the Hue outdoor motion sensor is great. It goes with lux level and temperature.

Thanks all, I think I’ll indeed go for the Hue outdoor motion sensor (in combination with a Conbee II Zigbee stick)…
