Permissions, ACLs and Backup Requirements

Hopefully a quick question(s). Currently I am using SMB to access the Backup Folder on HA to manually copy the backups to another location.
I aim to use the SMB Backup add-on to automate this. However I have a few questions:-

  1. I am aware the backups are encrypted. As the source is an SMB share are any permissions or Linux ACLs required for restoring a backup included when backups are copied across either manually or via the SMB Backup add-on. I wasn’t sure if an SMB share supported Linux permissions.
  2. Can HA restore a backup from a network location or does it only support a backup local file.
    Many thanks

You can set this on or off, except for backups going to the NC-Cloud.

Thanks @Sir_Goodenough Yes was aware of that thanks. I’m more interested in making sure any backups copied from HA install to an external device either a samba share or even a usb device are suitable to be used as a restore. I don’t want to find out at the time of re installation that they are no good. In the documents they are identified as a tar file. However when viewed on a samba share from windows they appear as a compressed archive?

Te backup files are created with the intent of being used for restore.
However no amount of storing your files can be called a backup if you have not tested it when you are not in a crisis situation.

Wise words indeed @Sir_Goodenough . However I don’t think many HA users including myself, have the luxury of a test machine to try a backup restore on and I doubt many would want to try it on their live environment to “Check it Works”. That’s the sort of testing that large corporations with dedicated backup specialist support staff try out.
I suppose those who run HA as a VM have the benefit of being able to take a snapshot and spinning up another VM to try it on.
I was merely trying to ascertain if copying Tar files from HA to another location would in some way “break” a restore ability due to differing filing systems.
Ill have to ask the question elsewhere
