I have three outdoor light fittings that are metal with an upwards and downwards facing GU10 bulb. I have it permanently wired. I tried using wifi bulbs as the wifi mesh station is just inside the wall. But they rarely all work. They randomly seem to lose connection but often reconnect when I am standing next to them with my phone. I can only assume they are somehow connecting via Bluetooth. I decided to try some zigbee GU10 bulbs to see if these are any more stable and they suffer the same thing. As in they randomly lose connection. For example right now four are controllable and two are stuck on.
I am starting to wonder if the issue is the bulbs being inside a metal light fixture on the outside of a double brick wall. Maybe this is shielding both wifi and zigbee signals. Weird though that I can control some but not all lights.
Yeah definitely the metal holder. I have some Lifx wifi GU10 bulbs in a metal spotlight holder. They barely connect with an access point in the same room. Downlights that have an open frame back in the same room do not have this issue.
Your only option is to change the light fitting. Or maybe try moving the mesh station (up/down/sideways) you may get lucky and find a spot that has better reception.
I have the same set up and had problems with two different brands of wifi bulbs, but it was the cold they didn’t like. They worked fine above freezing but started crapping out below that. It pained me to spend the money on Phillips hue bulbs, but they work with no problem in real cold weather.
Unfortunately not at present as they are wired to permanent power and have no switch in the circuit for me to replace. I did think about getting the electrician back to sort this out, but would prefer the possibility of colours.
