Proxmox and direct .iso install

I see everyone seems to be using the QCOW2 image with Proxmox I am relatively new to this and am wondering why I can’t just download the x86 .HAOS iso file and install that directly in Proxmox. Why do I need a specific format? Apparently I don’t quite understand some things that are going on with regards to using Proxmox since I am asking what seems to be a very basic quesiton.

As I understand it using the qcow image misses out a step of creating a bootable disc from an ISO disc image using an extra tool. If you look at the methods that use an ISO image you use Balena Etcher or DD via a Linux live session. No reason you can’t use an ISO but I suspect an extra level of pain to go through.

I just used the Proxmox community scripts.

For a better understanding check this: https://portal.habitats.tech/Home+Assistant+(HA)/3.+HAOS+-+Install+VM

Because there isn’t one provided by the HA developers?

Devs are aware of this pain point and have started discussing a way to make the install much simpler.

In the meantime, the easiest way would be just to use the Proxmox helper scripts in this guide Installing Home Assistant OS using Proxmox 8

Lots of why we can’t but… Also, Using a one line script on the prox console is stupid easy…

I spun up three test servers within twenty minutes yesterday I can’t imagine boot from iso woild be any easier.

I do understand the question, but the alternative is genuinely easier?

Mount ISO, start VM, pick options wait…

Or

Command… Accept defaults, yes, drink scotch and wait.

I like 2.

Or you can use the .ova and don’t have to depend on a magic script.
