Rain gauge clogging?

So, any way to avoid this? There was a slime that blocked the flow of water, this only took like 1 month to clog up.

Just wondering if there are any solutions to this other than continues cleaning.

Thanks

With mine it’s spiders’ webs. Cleaning is the only solution I’ve found.

Slime, though, suggests that water is standing for a long time - there’s none in mine, except for occasionally a drop in the “spoon”. How does yours empty itself?

Is that slime actually bird droppings?

The Davis VP2 owner solution for leaf clogs is to use an upside-down sink mesh strainer at the bottom of the rain gauge:

My rain gauge has never plugged solid since I put one in several years ago, as the upside-down mesh cone still lets water in until the leaves can be cleaned out as part of annual maintenance late every fall…

I would suggest you bend most or all of the spikes in towards the center of the cup so the birds do not just sit in the up - or in your case treat it like a bird bath! Example.

You have blocked the hole much too much. If there is a very small amount of rain it won’t even reach the cup. Consider one of these - the photo actually has it upside down - the hook goes into the hole so the cold itself adheres to the sahe of the cup. Anything in the cup will block some water due to surface tension, but at least this coiled wire would lead droplets into the hole.

This what I’ve got (I think it’s standard for Ecowitt?). Works very well. Apart from spiders’ webs.

To be fair, I have never seen a bird in it.

I do remember I do spray it with CRC from time to time, maybe it could be this?

It’s a common problem in water features in gardens. Keep the sunlight out. Pond water dye is safe to wildlife.

I had to look it up, but it does say that CRC is a silicone-based lubricant. Maybe that’s what’s causing the clogs

Yea i am wondering, I like to go quite over the top with my CRC, it’s like an addiction just spraying things.

Ill see how it goes and monitor it, it only clicked the other night but I suppose that could possibly be it.
