When you follow the instructions for installing Home Assistant Operating system, it has a real nice follow along tutorial on how to install to SD card. When you finish you wind up with a ha prompt on a black screen.
The very next step in the installation process says

  • In the browser of your desktop system, enter homeassistant.local:8123
    The key phrase in all of this is “in the browser of your desktop”
    Hey wait didn’t we just install the Home Assistant Operating system to the SD card and part of that process does away with an operating system that had a browser in it? I’m just presented with an ha prompt and that’s it.
    What to do?

You don’t have a laptop or similar? Where did you burn the SD card? That is the “desktop system” it is referring to.

Think of the Home Assistant OS as a web server. You interface with the dashboard using any browser on your network.
