What are the current recommendations around temperature/humidity sensors for outdoor use, that are compatible with HomeAssistat?
I know that traditionally, the consensus was that 433Mhz/915Mhz sensors were better, due to better range, better battery life, and lower cost. However, is that still always the case, for all of those attributes?
Some of the BLE/wifi options seem alright - you do get less range (50m or so) - but if you have either BLE proxies, or good outdoor wifi coverage, it seems they’re a viable option?
I put together a quick table with the options I’m aware of:
| Model | HA Support? | RF Frequency | Battery (Battery Life) | Price (AUD) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Govee H5179 | Yes (BLE only) | 2.4Ghz (BLE/Wifi) | 3 x AA batteries | AUD 27.50 |
| Shelly BLU H&T | Yes | 2.4Ghz (BLE) | 1 x CR2032 (3 years) | AUD 39.00 |
| Accurite 06002M Replacement Sensor | Yes (via rtl_433) | 433Mhz | 2 x AA batteries | AUD 34.00 |
| Ecowitt WN32 Outdoor Sensor | Yes (via rtl_433) | 433 Mhz | 2 x AA batteries (1 year) | AUD 25.99 |
What do people think - are the Accurite and Ecowitt sensors still better options?
They don’t really seem cheaper than the BLE/Wifi options nowadays - and the battery life isn’t that much better, at least compared to say the Shelly Blu H&T?
Or what else do people recommend?
