Redesign energy sensor setup

As I will be moving into a new house it’s time to redesign my Homeassistant setup. I am currently still doubting how to setup my energy sensors. I want to track consumption per appliance, but also of groups of appliances (like all kitchen appliances). Thinking about two different approaches:

  1. Use Powercalc to consume all the power sensors and use powercalc to do the grouping
  2. Use the energy sensors of the power plugs and then use the “upstream device” mechanism in the energy dashboard to do the grouping (nesting devices into 1 upstream category) and adding all Zigbee lights via Powercalc.

Which approach would deliver the best results (both from accuracy, functionality and future proofing)?

Have you considered grouping by area, such as ‘kitchen’?

Not yet: what would the benefit of that be? Will it then also display properly in the energy dashboard with the right group in the sankey chart?

To reply to myself: if you do it via grouping by area the resulting Sankey displays nicely.
