Reed Switch - idea for a sliding gate

Hello,

I have a dumb gate motor that uses rf keys.
1 key opens 1/4 and the 2nd key open the gate fully.

I wanted to put a reed switch that can detect if the gate is closed, 1/4 open, fully open.

I am wondering if putting a magnet on the gate and have 3 reed switch at the 3 positions. Loading these on an esp32 with esphome to get a status on home assistant.

I don’t have the materials to verify now, but wondering if this will work.
Thanks.

I imagine that would be doable as long as you have power for the esp32, I did something similar with a door lock. I butchered an aquara door sensor, attached a different reed switch and embedded it in the door frame. Then added a magnet to the bolt of the lock so I can see when the door’s locked / unlocked.

The tricky bit was adjusting it to the right sensitivity to make sure it was totally reliable.

Sounds quite simple for an esp32.
