Remote Car Temperature Sensor

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for a hardware solution to monitor the temperature inside my car and ideally integrate it into Home Assistant.

The car is a VW Golf 8.5 GTE, and I would like to place a small temperature sensor somewhere inside the vehicle.

The main problem is that the car is often parked outside the range of my home Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or Zigbee network. So a normal Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or Zigbee temperature sensor would not really help.

What I am looking for is something that can transmit the temperature independently, for example via:

  • LTE / 4G / 5G

  • LTE-M / NB-IoT

  • LoRaWAN, if that would make sense

  • or another cloud-based/mobile solution

Ideally, the device should be:

  • battery powered or rechargeable

  • small enough to leave permanently inside the car

  • able to work for a reasonably long time without charging

  • able to send temperature readings even when the car is far away from my home network

  • somehow accessible from Home Assistant, for example via MQTT, REST API, cloud integration or another workaround

I do not necessarily need very frequent updates. A temperature reading every 10–30 minutes, or even less often while the car is parked, would probably be enough.

Has anyone built something similar or knows suitable hardware for this?

I would also be interested in DIY solutions, for example ESP32-based hardware with an LTE-M / NB-IoT modem, as long as power consumption is reasonable.

Thanks!

You didnt say how far from HA you park. A 5 bucks 433mhz battery outdoor humidity and temperature sensor may be enough for 50 to 100m.

If you are talking miles away then something like meshtastic and BMP 280. Can run off usb and have a lithium cell. Though leaving a lithium cell in a car you are concerned about temperature is not a good idea.

I can get 20miles with mine but dont have temp module added
