Renaming a device

I want to shorten the name. I read somewhere that renaming the device causes some sort of entity issue. Maybe I am misunderstanding however.

What method can I use to shorten the name without having an issue?

Basically any “method” , but various Devices/integrations “reports” Names Differently, so it’s hard to use one Method, or give you One suggestion

So something to consider with your example could look like

Dont call it “Smart Plug” ( Im pretty sure you know it’s a smart plug ! ) And you might not want All your Smart Plugs to be Called " My SmartPlug " i have i.e +40 “Smart Plugs”
Skip Calling it “Electric” , im Pretty sure non of your devices consume anything else
" Consumption" is also a matter of taste, Even this i would skip, as All 4 entities ( On each Devices) will end up with this long word.

I Uses a variation of so called “naming strategies”, Depending upon Brand/Integration, And Device-Types.
So decide for each, the first time you install a Device/Integration ( When you know how HA handle it’s Naming ) , And try to get rit of Redundant, Pointless Words

NOTE:
Remember , in most cards you have options to use/add other/additional Names, beside there are Floors,Areas,Label etc. which can help you “reconnice” a Device

Click on the entity. Click on the cog icon at the top right of the pop-up card. Rename the entity. Save.

I Do think he Mend, Rename Device, as stated

I have to agree with Tom, but the question is not how, but if it will have consequences…

No, it does not, you can rename them as you see fit. But I agree with @boheme61 , use a logical naming convention.

Does renaming a device alter the names of all the devices entities?
Do the new names get automatically adjusted at the dashboards or automations?
I think these are the important questions.

One can always alter the “friendly” name of a device for dashboard display without touching the internal names. I dont know if this is helpful.

I go with other suggestions to come up with a naming logic for your devices early on

Rename the device to “Pump”.

Renaming the device doesn’t automatically change the names of all entities. What you need to do when you rename a device is click on the device so that you see the device page then click the three dots at the top right and select ‘Recreate entity IDs’ which should open a pop-up showing you which entities will be changed with their current name and new name.

:+1: Or PumpO , O for Outdoor and " Pumpi for Indoor

Well it wasn’t easy. I had to change everything and I am wondering if anyone in the developer area has thought of a way to make a change in one location that would rename all the entities for a device when it’s renamed?
