Reolink cameras integration through home hub are throwing a 500

Hello everyone, I hope this post finds you well.

I usually never post on forums, but I’m kinda stuck and this is getting too technical for me.
I was trying to integrate my reolink cameras, managed by my home hub (not pro), to a camera feeds dashboard. This worked well for a few minutes before suddenly failing.
When I take a look at my dev tool, in the network tab, I see the requests being hit by a 500.
When I try to access the recordings of my cameras, I get the same thing, a 500 error, with this message: Reolink playback expected video/mp4 but got text/html.

I don’t know if this is a home assistant related issue or a reolink issue, it works for a few minutes after I reboot my hub and fails again.

I’ve followed all the necessary steps to integrate reolink to HA, and looked online for a solution but, so far, no dice.

I really need this feature, I don’t wanna have to switch to the reolink app every time I wanna have a look at my cameras.

Thank you,
and have a blessed day

A few things to check that I can think of:

  • If you are using Adguard, Pihole, or something else that messes with your DNS look-up, make sure that is working the way you think it is
  • Make sure you have a static address on the hub, and that the IP is what you think it is in the integration.
  • If you are running Vlans, the Hub and cameras should be in the same range, and as flat as possible to the HA instance. HA likes a flat network, any VLan nonsense messes you up more than you think.
  • The core Reolink integration is about the best one available, so if you are not using that, try it.

I’m not using anything that has to do with DNS, the hub has a static ip set up on my router, I do have a few vlans though … the cameras are on a vlan, the hub on another, and HA on a third, but I don’t think that the issue is coming from my network setup as HA is able to reach the hub, but the hub is responding with a 500. I am using the core integration yes.
I did more digging on this, and it seems like the hub is the origin of the issue, I looked at HA’s logs and found that, when trying to access my recordings that are stored on the hub from HA, the hub sends an HTML response showing an njnix error 500, instead of an mp4 file. both live view and playbacks are working on the reolink desktop app.
Maybe I should ask reolink’s support team about this

Have a look at the last point here, maybe you missed allowing some ports between vlans.

So, I went ahead and made my cameras, hub and ha server share the same vlan, which, if it is a vlan issue, should have gotten rid of it. it is, however, not the case, the live view still doesn’t load when reaching the cameras through the hub, I’ll try to remove the cameras from the hub and connected them one by one instead and let you know

okay,

expectedly, it is working perfectly fine when I run my camera as a standalone
whenever I wanna add them back to the hub, it ends up failing after a few minutes.
so there is something wrong happening somewhere between ha and the hub, I lack the ability to figure out what exactly

I was experiencing a similar problem: cameras worked fine in standalone mode, but would stop working when linked to the hub (usually after the 2nd camera).
Setup: Home Hub 2 with different PoE cameras.
The root cause was a faulty SD card, which would hang home hub 2 and start acting erratically (disconnects, loss of streams, freeze after configuration change).
The system has been running fine for +48h after using another SD card.
