Request for remote access suggestions

So I currently plan to install home assistant on a old laptop I have (4th gen i7 2c4t 16g ram 1tb hdd). I plan to use it as a NVR for a couple of nest cam 1st generations that I can get pretty cheap second hand.

Is there a secure way to remotely access the home assistant server without connecting to my home network via a VPN? I’m comfortable setting up reserse proxies with valid ssl certs with dynamic dns. This is for my parents so I want this to be as frictionless as possible.

I see that in the docs that port forwarding and all the certificates are all supported but I just want to know whether this is widely used or not.

These are different uses.
It’s home assistant or it’s NVR.
Maybe look at blakeblackshear/frigate · Discussions · GitHub as the official Frigate support hub.

Does home assistant not support NVR?

An NVR saves and stores the files for future playback. HA mostly shows camera feeds, not made for storage.

Would HA work with the motion detection from the camera?

yes, a “motion detection” (in the right integration) you can use to “trigger” anything

Might be a good idea to stick a sign on your HA
