I’m making use of the built in amplifier so I need a DAC with line out levels to use as input to built in amp. If I ever convert the 2nd Gen Dot then I will need something like the TAS5805M. There is a good chance I will do this at a later date since the Dot and the full size Echo use the same Mic/LED board so a lot of the work will have already been done.

That is both disappointing and exciting news!
Disappointing because I now have a working 2 gen Echo with my control board (details will follow soon) using Esphome, and it looks like it may have been unnecessary.
Exciting because it is a lot cheaper to re-flash the control board rather than design and build a new one.
I’ll have use one of my spare Echos to see what this is like.
The more ways that smart devices can be made private the better.
I’ve made a lot of progress on this project and now have a device that looks like a 2nd generation Amazon Echo but actually functions as a Voice Assistant for Home Assistant. Here’s a video detailing what has been done. Skip forward to 05:33 if you just want the demonstration.

So for people with the 2nd gen Echo Dot. Somebody did it and manged to reflash the Echo Dot 2
Big respect, by far the most elegant way.
And most recently the echo Input, I hope to see EchoMuse support this device too!

So I managed to port Echo Muse to my Show 5 1st gen so just a matter of time until Echo Muse works with all devices with the Mediatek MT8163
