Hi all. I would like to ask you all about the possibilities how to monitor the position of my balcony glazing segments (something like this: https://youtu.be/AHoPyt2tKXg?si=FbGrKOFEFtfoJSGT&t=53). Each segment has default position and can be slided to any position right from the default one. The segment can be retracted to the very right side by 90 degrees.
I have Ikea zigbee shades on the balcony and I would like to prevent them to close when the segment is not in the default position. The shades are for indoor use, the wind or rain may break them.
I was thinking about putting something like accelerometer on each glass segment or video monitoring with some fancy AI software. Anyone has done something like that?
Bear in mind this is the first time I’ve heard of such a product, so take my advice with a pinch of salt.
The way I would do it is by only monitoring the very first segment. Given that one needs to move in order for the rest to be able to slide over, you should be able to safely assume the open/closed state based on that alone.
A small door/window sensor placed at the open or closed locations would give you a pretty accurate picture of whether your windows are open or not. You could even stick a small neodymium magnet on the glass instead of the magnet which come with the door/window sensors. These type of magnets are slimmer and much stronger, making them less obtrusive and allowing a greater gap between the magnet and the sensor itself.
