Ring two-way audio from Pi 4B kiosk — is it possible?

Hi everyone,

I hope you’re doing well. I’ve been setting up Home Assistant on a Raspberry Pi 4B and I’m stuck on a specific use case. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Setup:

  • Raspberry Pi 4B, HAOS 17.2, DSI screen in kiosk mode
  • Ring Video Doorbell integrated in HA
  • ReSpeaker Lite (Wyoming-compatible USB mic/speaker) connected to the Pi

Goal:
When someone rings the doorbell, I want to see the video feed and talk back using the ReSpeaker Lite connected to the Pi, directly from the DSI screen dashboard — without using a tablet or smartphone.

Current state:
The live view popup works fine in the HA dashboard (snapshot visible + Ring native live view on click). But two-way audio is not working.

Questions:

  1. Is Ring two-way audio possible from the HA dashboard on a Pi kiosk setup?
  2. Can the ReSpeaker Lite be used for this purpose, or is it strictly limited to voice assistant (Wyoming) use?
  3. Is there any working alternative to achieve two-way audio in this kind of setup, without relying on a tablet?

Thank you very much for your time and help!

The only product I’m aware of that will do 2-way audio/video w/ a ring doorbell that is not a tablet, are Brilliant “light switches”, but it’s gonna use it’s own mic and speakers.

Thanks for the advice. In the end, I decided to change my doorbell because of too many integration problems with Ring. I’m switching to one that’s fully compatible with Home Assistant. Have a good evening.

Before you commit, note that there are no built in integrations which allow you to configure 2-way talk in HA natively.

The only ones I know which might get you what you want are Reolink & Hikvision, and both require you to jump through some pretty fiery hoops to achieve 2 way talk.
