I just bought a new house. It’s heated by a central heating unit that’s controlled by a thermostat in the living room. Like most (Dutch) houses the radiators in the other rooms will only heat when the living rooms needs heating. Usually this means you can choose between a very hot living room or the other rooms being cold.
After some research I think I want to go for a solution using a thermostat that works nicely together with HA and smart valves.
Now I was wondering what would be the best solution?
I was thinking of a rooted Toon2 and Tado smart valves. But can I use the Tado valves without the Tado thermostat? Every room in my house already has a Xiaomi Mi to measure the temperature.
Hi Wouter,
not sure if this is still an issue but I thought I’d share what I have done, which is a solution to exactly your situation.
I have equipped my heaters HomematicIP valves and I am using the rooted Toon1 basically just as an on/off switch for the heater.
Every valve checks the temperature in its room. Whenever the set temp is higher than the measured temp, the Toon is automatically set to heating mode. As soon as the set temperature is set, the Toon is turned off again.
In addition I am using window and door sensors for smart control of the heating valves. After 20 sec or so of a window/door being opened, the valves will close and the heater will be turned off. When the door/ window is closed again the valve will return to the previously set temperature.
it all works very reliably and I can only recommend the HMIP valves. I don’t know the Tado ones so cannot comment on them.
