Scoopy is a tiny ESPHome room controller with two buttons, LEDs, Bluetooth Proxy and mmWave presence sensing

Hi everyone!

I’ve been working on a little ESPHome device called Scoopy, and I thought it was about time I shared it properly here.

Scoopy started because I wanted a small, tidy physical controller that I could put around the house without having an ESP32, buttons and wires stuffed into yet another project box.

The result is a tiny ESP32-C3 based controller with:

  • Two physical buttons

  • Three RGB status LEDs

  • ESPHome

  • Bluetooth Proxy

  • mmWave presence sensing

  • Wi-Fi setup and OTA firmware updates

  • A small 3D-printed enclosure in a probably unnecessary number of colours

The buttons appear as events in Home Assistant, so they’re deliberately not tied to any particular function. Lights, scenes, blinds, media, scripts — whatever makes sense for the room.

I’ve been using mine for things like time-aware lighting, controlling blinds and combining the buttons with presence automations.

From little project to little product

I originally made Scoopy for myself, but after sharing it with the Home Assistant community there was quite a bit more interest than I expected!

The first batch ended up being considerably bigger than planned, so I’ve spent the last couple of weeks improving the whole thing, production PCBs, a flashing/testing setup, OTA updates, documentation, setup flow and a few other bits that I hadn’t anticipated needing when I made the first one.

I’m now properly stocked up and making them in both Scoopy (with optional presence sensing) and Scoopy Compact versions.

You can see the hardware, setup instructions and some Home Assistant examples here:

Feedback, criticism and ridiculous automation ideas are all very welcome!
