Has anyone set up a secondary network for their HASS or camera data? I think I may be exceeding the throughput on my home network as I have added cameras and such. As I have added cameras I have noticed some sluggishness in standard web browsing and some with online game-play but mostly with initial connections or browser searches.
I’m curious if anyone thinks this is even possible (the slowness). I’m not running any Gigabit anything so it’s all 10/100 through whatever modem/router AT&T gave me, some wired, some wireless. If so, should I invest in a second router (Lan/Wan configuration) to run HASS, ZoneMinder, Wink, and cameras?
Here is what I currently have although not everything is ‘always’ connected:
9 IP cams
Server for Zoneminder
Raspberry Pi 3 for HASS
7 PC/Laptops
6 cellphones
3 tablets
3 Playstations
1 SmartTV
1 FireTV
1 Wink (1st Gen)
3 Echos (1 Echo/2 Dot)
So I recently acquired a full HP G6 server and was thinking of combining HASS (from Pi) and ZoneMinder (from dedicated PC) onto it, most likely running Ubuntu 16.04 server, and placing it all onto this (theoretical) Lan-to-Wan cascaded network.
Has anyone ever run ZoneMinder & HASS together on one system? Any issues or concerns or would it be better to keep them separate?
Regardless if I combine into the server, I know I already have concerns about getting the Wink and Echos to speak to each other (unless this 2nd network has enough WiFi range) as well as connecting back to the FireTV as well.
I also picked up a couple of WRT54GL so I believe I have the network part covered.
I’m not sure if this is interesting to anyone but just in case…
So here is what I have learned… WRT54GL was not the router for the job at hand.Something different on the way.
I was able to separate all the HA and security bandwidth to a secondary lan but then the WRT started malfunctioning. A replacement is en route.
I have ZM running on a DL380 G7 24 core (I think) 32Gb which is complete overkill but on the plus side, with 9 cameras the core averages 0.4.
I also did a fresh install of HA (still on Pi) and realized how much I forgot from my initial installation but overall appears to be working. I’m still tinkering with the idea of running HASS on the actual server if for nothing else to better utilize it.This would free the Pi up for other projects.
Before the WRT gave out, I found that I was able to see the primary lan from the secondary lan so connecting to the Wink and Echos went well (will probably migrate them to secondary lan eventually). Using port forwarding to the IP of the secondary router (WRT), you can still access HA and ZM (and cameras) from the primary LAN and Internet.
I also acquired another Dot from Santa so that will almost give me Alexa control from every corner of the house (4 total now).
I am so in love with HA’s capabilities and the smart integration possibilities that exist.
Now a couple of questions…
** Does anyone have any recommendations for creating floorplans or layouts to have a visual track of their smart features/automations?
** When did HA start reporting on Wink’s firmware status? **Edit, think I found this in the last Release Notes
