Not looking for presence detection. Looking for a solution for a family member who is secretly using their phone in middle of night, off WiFi and via gsm data.
Any suggestions how to detect it in the room without the sensor being too intrusive?
Confiscate the phone until morning.

I know someone with 7 kids. The phones go on chargers in the hallway with a camera on them at bedtime.
My son got into some serious trouble in high school and his phone was a point of contention.
Resolution: I took his iPhone away and replaced it with a phone that had a Windows 7 OS.
The hardest part was explaining to Verizon why I needed it activated 
In the end it worked, he was too embarrassed to pull it out during class.

That’s what’s caused the blow ups. They have been advised not to do this. I agree with you but unfortunately not an option so looking for alternatives. Wondering about ambient light / blue light sensors or something like that
Ask a parenting forum for advice then.
Home assistant can’t help with this. Anything you install will be discovered and easily circumvented.
