Selection of DoorLock

Hi All,

What all protocol should a door lock support to integrate with HA. I am a buyer from Alibaba and its hard for me to choose smart door locks that works with my HA.

Unfortunately there aren’t any guaranties that a lock will work with HA unless some one made a specific integration for it and/or actually tested it with the integration you have in mind. I would not dare recommend you anything specific, because there are no guarantees.

I would also hesitate to trust the security of my home to a generic brand with a low price. Quality does not come cheap (though expensive does not guarantee quality either).

But as far as standards go, I would consider z-wave and Matter to be the best bets. Matter is however very new, especially when you also want to unlatch. Z-wave is more tried and tested. Zigbee products often do not adhere to standards (I do not even know if there are zigbee locks). Wifi has no standard for locks, it will be brand specific what they will use.

Personally I own a Nuki lock that I operate over Matter. It helps me to know it uses my existing lock mechanism and cilinder, so I know what quality they are.

If you buy a lock, seach the internet and the forum for experiences. If at all possible look for one you can try and return if it does not live up to your expectations.

I have been using Schlage Z-Wave Door Locks since 2017 and for the most part, if you change the batteries, they have been great. The only struggle I have is with a detached garage where that lock will routinely go offline until I go out there and work it a few times. I honestly think it goes to sleep with non-use to save the batteries. I wish I could shut that off. I do have two Z-Wave repeaters that run the security protocols needed but I still am sitting on 468 commands dropped on the Rx side and 143 Electronic Failed Counts. Winter is better than summer and I think that has to do with the density of the air between the house and my garage.
