You can create your own IR code file by ‘learning’ the IR codes from the original remote.

Well I had a look on this, none have MQTT AFAIK. But the main question is do I just copy the raw IR data as it is shown on some ESPHome example?

To resolve this:
- If you’ve not already done so, set up the integration.

I updated too the sensor used for power_sensor, from sensor to binary_sensor, and it works, but now the card in the dashboard don’t update his value as “power on”.
In development tools can see that the binary sensor works:

It gives feedback to HA to understand if the device is on or off. This is needed because IR does not provide feedback to HA since it’s only one-way data. The power sensor fixes this feedback issue.

A power monitoring plug which supplies an amplifier / TV / fan for example.
But how does it work in reality for aircon? The main of the aircon is not traditionally connected to the plug right?

It depends on your situation. You could use a non-plug style power monitoring device.
Is it a split system A/C? Some people have used wireless door/window sensors attached to the front air outlet blades such that when the unit is turned off, the sensor detects that the blades have closed, and when the unit is running the blades are open. This gives a binary sensor feedback to SmartIR that the A/C on on or off.

I think I get what you mean, sort of. Essentially I could have a temperature sensor nearby and if I fire the off command, the temp reading should increase after a period of time. If it doesn’t, it means that the ac is still on.
Or, I have a cctv that has a view of the ac.
In essence, it’s because IR is one way and we need “another” device to provide confirmation of the state so that in the event of a misfire, we will not be seeing the wrong state in ha.

HA has no idea if your split A/C is on or off since you may have used the regular remote to turn it on/off at some point. HA could send a ‘start’ command over IR and perhaps it didn’t make it or in many cases, the on and off commands are the same and the A/C unit simply toggles. By adding some kind of sensor to the A/C (either monitoring it’s power consumption or opening of the air vent) HA can have feedback of the A/C’s status. When you turn on the A/C, the power consumption goes from zero to whatever value. With a power meter connected HA can then safely assume that the A/C is on. The same is for a contact sensor on the air vent. Since most split A/C’s close the vents completely when off, a sensor will ‘tell’ HA that the unit is off. Using one of these methods means that the Climate entity for your A/C within HA will always show the correct state of the A/C.

I used THESE “ZigBee Socket Switch Module KWh Meter Energy Monitor devices” installed between the electricity line and the AC units. They are small enough to be hidden behind the cover of the indoor units.
Then I closely monitored electricity usage for different HVAC modes like cooling, heating, fan only etc. to draw conclusions in which mode an AC unit is actually running at.
With all the data collected it is easy to build automations to reflect the mode an AC unit is actually running at to use with one of the many theromstat cards available for Lovelace.

All this works surprisingly well and very reliable with the IR blasters used since many years now.
Thanks! Got it now. If you don’t mind, my next question that pop up in the mind is - so I created the smartir as a button. I control the smartir remote as is.
Assuming I install the door contact sensor, someone uses the remote to turn on ac. Contact sensor will report ac as on but smartir still show off. How exactly do I direct contact sensor state to smartir?
I initially thought of using automation → when contact sensor on then on smartir. But it will retrigger the ac to turn on again. So you will hear 2 beep sound, 1 from original remote, 1 from the automation.
Or am I not understanding how the power sensor work? Could it be a case of if I map the power sensor to the contact sensor, once sensor report on/off, it will automatically update the whole smartir?
Meaning in my case above, if someone uses the remote control, contact sensor report on, smart ir will automatically turn on as well…?
