I am considdering using a smartlock. As far as I can see, most smartlocks use bluetooth to communicate to a hub an then use the hub to ‘phone home’ using wifi. I don’t like any device in my house to depend on a connection outside, especially if that means that access to my house depends on that. Home Assistant does a great jon on keeping my data local.
Is there any smartlock that can interact with Home Assistant without depending on a external connection?
For example; Is there a way to connect to the bluetooth connection? Or maybe a proxy service for the hub?
I use a Conexis L1 by Yale. There are various modules you can add to these locks. I have the Z Wave module which connects directly to HA via a Z Wave USB stick. All of the control then happens locally.
They do have a WiFi module that connects to some of their alarm systems and I think they do connect by to Yale’s servers.
Go through the lock integrations and check for those with a local IoT class.
It would also help if you could state in which region you live, as there are for example completely different manufacturers in EU or US, as doors and locking mechanisms are very different.
I have the switchbot door lock and it utilizes BT directly with HA (I used a BT Proxy near it to get a better signal). No complaints at all and I felt the price was very reasonable. Only real con is it attaches over your existing deadbolt instead of replacing it; I would have preferred the latter but the switchbot was cheaper (and for renters, it would actually be a plus).
I don’t know about all Yale locks, but I have an August Lock Pro 3 with Z-Wave integration. Yale and August are owned by the same parent company and they appear to have at least partially combined their cloud/digital services. Anyway… Turning on the Z-Wave integration on my particular lock required the following:
August Phone App
August Account
Lock association to that account via Phone App
Z-Wave radio activation via August Phone App (firmware update style provisioning)
Z-Wave inclusion via August Phone App
The non-cloud options appear to only be intended as complimentary and not a substitute of cloud/app functionality. As far as I can tell, everything you’d need to do to setup alternate controls for the August/Yale locks requires the app/cloud. If they ever EoL the lock/app, it should continue to work if you don’t ever need to re-engage provisioning. But if you do, you’re SoL.
Mainly chiming in with those details because the Yale Access Bluetooth and Z-Wave Integrations are classed Local Push, but are dependent upon Cloud Services to provision.
Anyone have a recommendation for upvc door smart lock, local control, preferably zigbee.
I know there is aquara smart lock but they are too wide for my doors.
