Ok, I finally got my fridge / freezer sensor built, and got a house printed at a buddy, now it works EVERY time.
I’ve placed a D1 mini in the case, along with two switches. I had to find some microswitches with a long arm, unfortunately they were also quite tall in the house itself, which sort of made it a bit bulky, but it was just small enough to fit over the top cupboards.
But now it works 100% (please ignore the dust :-D)

Regarding the mi jia into my fridge it is now at 83 % of battery. When I put it into the fridge it was around 95 %. This gave 12 % lost in 2 months.
With this method I think we can expect at least 8 months of duration.
