Stuga: an alternative iOS/Android app for Home Assistant

I’ve been using Home Assistant for a long time, and I’ve always felt that the mobile experience is the hardest part to get right.

I wanted something that felt genuinely phone-first and fast for everyday stuff — like quickly dimming a room — without having to maintain dashboards or think about layout.

I started building this just for my own family, mostly as an experiment, but it ended up being something we actually use daily. At that point I figured it was worth sharing and seeing what other people think.

Some core ideas behind it:

  • No config beyond logging in
  • Direct connection to HA APIs (WebSocket for instant updates)
  • Uses HA’s rooms/floors metadata instead of dashboards
  • You can rename rooms, change icons, and reorder things directly in the app (saved back to HA)
  • Swipe a room card to control the whole room, expand for individual devices/scenes

Android and web are available.
iOS is currently in App Store review — if you’re interested, leave a comment and I’ll reply when it’s live.

This is still beta and definitely not perfect.
I’m particularly interested in:

  • what feels awkward or unintuitive
  • how it behaves with other peoples devices and setups
  • whether this approach makes sense at all compared to the official app
