Suggestion: notify on thermostat unavailable

A quick recommendation for anyone who hasn’t already done this - if home heating or cooling is critical, set up an automation that notifies you when your thermostat goes unavailable.

I set this up over a year ago when I was troubleshooting an unrelated problem and frankly forgot about it after I solved that riddle.

Imagine my surprise when my whole house audio just announced the upstairs thermostat was offline. Took a look and it’s not getting power. Resetting all the various breakers did nothing.

Fortunately, my HVAC guy is awesome and on the way over to fix it on a weekend without an appointment. Had I not received the notification it would have been hours before I noticed and likely not been looked at until Monday.

Seems trivial but with 100 degree temps outside, lack of AC is an emergency in my area. Fortunately we have two zones so the other unit is working overtime to keep the house bearable.

Thank you Nabu Casa and the entire Home Assistant community for building such a powerful product and helping keep my home and family safe!

I would go one step further and recommend notification for any critical things going unavailable. I use this template sensor to do this:

I also check for changes or traffic from the device, to make sure it’s actually working and sending data.
