Switching from Homematic IP to Home Assistant – Questions & Advice Needed

Hello,

I currently have a Homematic IP setup with an access point. Since I can’t control all devices and would also like to integrate my Fronius photovoltaic system, I’m considering switching to Home Assistant. Can someone tell me how to go about this?

Here are my questions:

  • What hardware do I need for a three-story house?
  • Will the Homematic IP devices be automatically recognized in Home Assistant?
  • What costs are involved? Is it really free? If so, how is it funded?

Maybe someone can help me, as there are surely some smart minds in this forum.

Thank you very much!

Honematic IP is a proprietary RF protocol, so HA can not directly talk to devices.
Honematic IP is however pretty well integrated with both the needed hardware and software.
If you have an CCU 2 or 3, then you can just install the integration (homematic_local is recommend and can be found through HACS).
If you do not have a CCU, then you need one and here HA have addons and standalone Docker container to emulate one.
You will need a RF device to talk to the Honematic IP devices.
I will recommend the USB device to about 30€ here. Homematic IP noch vielseitiger steuerbar - Homematic IP RFUSB Stick für alternative Steuerungsplattformen | ELV Elektronik | Bücher / Software / Lernpakete

I might find a device on other sites, but be careful not to get a Telekom one, since that is crippled when it became vendor specific.

That site is the official outlet for Honematic IP devices, so buy from there.

You will need to run eithe Debmatic or RaspberryMatic (RaspverryMatic is the easiest one of you run in on the HA box) to emulate the CCU and once that is done, then Homematic_local can integrate to it.
