What are the possibilities of launching this as your own brand of switches instead of drop in replacement.
Also if you can do native 2-way the that would be a game changer.

Daniel i would need to swap the mmwave module (I think) to make it work in a vertical orientation, I'll have to confirm. Apart from that no issue.

Re dimming, it would just require the Dimmer base and a firmware change on SwitchRoo (pwm output instead of binary relay output), so yes likely easy to do, will confirm!

The dimming firmware is not entirely trivial. A simple zero-crosding detector can be fooled by noise on the mains, or even signals directly injected by the power company around the zero crossing. You basically need to create a phase-locked loop in firmware to sync with the mains and ignore the noise around 0V. This gets you a robust phase control system. Not simple, but not excessively difficult either.

Without this you will have lights flickering and annoying customers.

FYI I design scientific equipment that is sold to virtually every electrical jusisdiction around the world. Phase control is used for blower speed and heater control, over all the various voltage and frequency standards.

My thoughts for you:

  • I'll second the request for vertical mounting; vertical light switches are the standard in New Zealand.
  • I agree with the recommendation to remove your reliance on Deta and instead make your own injection faceplates and electronics. Yes, this means certification hassle BUT the upsides are:
    • if one of your customers reports a failure, you won't be having to troubleshoot the Deta product
    • in addition to being dubious quality, the Deta switches are uuuuuuuuggly (personally I would never touch them)
    • you then have the ability to offer different faceplates in future (easy product range expansion and upsell)
    • your designs aren't constrained by Deta's design decisions or product iterations (what if they alter their product)
    • your sales aren't limited by Deta's product availability (what if their supply chain is disrupted or they decide to stop selling any/all of the range you rely on)
  • Certification cost is obviously a consideration, but my guess is there would be a huge market of HA enthusiasts in AU/NZ who would willingly contribute to this, so perhaps you could look at a Kickstarter to help get you off the ground? I was an early backer of Nate from Konnected on Kickstarter for his alarm retrofit solution and Konnected is now well-established. Similar story with Lewis and Dave from Everything Smart Tech.
  • You can already see there's a bunch of talented and helpful people here who would enjoy contributing their skills to help out with everything from product design thinking to product testing, content creation to coding, to help you bring this great product to life so don't be shy to ask!

It's the standard in Australia as well. No idea where the concept of horizontal mounting has come from in this thread.

While I love your enthusiasm with this project and your efforts so far, there is one thing to keep in mind.... Deta is bad.

As an electrician in Australia with a lot of experience with many brands of equipment, Deta is absolutely terrible. Their products are generally low quality. I would never buy them. My house had a lot of Deta light switches and socket outlets when I bought it because the previous owner had done a cheap renovation. I replaced all of them with Clipsal because the Deta gear was just hopeless. Poor quality switch mechanisms, mounting screws and plastic.

That's going to be a doddle in software. Multi-way should be no issue either.

This is the power of this concept, to free the inputs, outputs, indicators and sensors from each other, should you choose to do so. It's all in the firmware, rather than hard wired on the Deta board sandwich layer the SwitchRoo portion is replacing.

The sandwich concept is what makes this possible, and so potent.

I think what makes them lack visual appeal is the proportions are wrong. The circles are too far apart and also too small.

Perhaps this is because I’m used to the spacing and size of regular light switches but these delta ones always looked off to me.

It doesn’t help they are also the cheapest plastic finish you can get

have you had discussions with clipsal? i understand they are now no longer an Australian outfit.

They were bought out by Schneider way back in 2003. Still the best quality electrical brand in Australia.

Will you be going to Sydney next month to display your products to a captive audience?
Deta or Bunnings may wish to cover your costs as sponsors, both travel and accommodation, as it will boost their sales and generate further sales leads, and a groundswell of enthusiasts, and show support for Aussie innovation. They may also offer their Deta products (and other home automation products) for a cheaper price for attendants or purchases on the night in the form of discount vouchers or actual products. Maybe Kogan may wish to support you as well as have a sales and marketing outlet?

Reading about a nifty product on a forum is one thing. Meeting up with the innovator, seeing and handling the product, watching it get easily assembled inside the original Deta casing, and being able to ask questions and have them answered on the spot is another. Getting one into your hot little hands RIGHT NOW without having to wait and pay for postage is another. Buying frenzy is awesome to watch, and can be frightening when you get to the last few left. People will happily pay upwards of $100 towards your R&D expenses as enthusiastic support if they get a prototype or early release model to play with, even if it is personally autographed with a Sharpie on the inside PCB where it can't be seen assembled.

Bring a big suitcase full, as you will sell the lot on the night! People will come, just for the privilege to buy and support your product and shout you a beer. Even if you only have a sample prototype that isn't available for sale yet, the buzz generated for you as a guest speaker will make the evening enjoyable for enthusiasts, and have spinoff benefits for future sales, industry contacts and access to other bright innovators and sponsors, as well as priceless organic publicity. You don't have to be a marketing guru - your product sells itself and you just have to be there to answer the questions, and sign autographs.

Of course the Melbourne people will want to start something too. Maker clubs or local uni departments may come to the party, or even a Saturday session at a local Bunnings with a sausage or two (and a screwdriver).

Hi Sam, just wanted to show my support ... even if I can't use them because I'm renting (and so can't touch the fittings).

I would echo CJB's suggestion of a Kickstarter (or similar crowd funding) to kick the production off. Enthusiastic comments are great - but you need hard cash up front for that all-important first production run ... and a kickstarter allows people to show their enthusiasm as pre-paid orders.

You have already put in a lot of effort, produced some physical prototypes, and seem realistic about the work still to do. I wish you well.
