System restarts with "old" version, plus cant update core

I have been fighting this for a couple months. I have a dedicated NUC, running 2022.12.4. It is not a complex build, only have a few addons, automations, and config file adds. Nothing cutting edge.

I have been trying to keep this machine stable and not a test machine as this will be used in my newly purchased house so im not trying to be cutting edge.

anyway.

Im getting a few warnings in the logs and an error about MQTT. but nothing I can track down.

I have attempted to remove literally every addon and config file so I can upgrade, but at some point the system will not restart and ssh wont work.

the weird part is that when it restarts, it chooses a very old version/backup. I know as it has Frigate addon which didnt work for me and I removed it. I have even deleted every single backup that is stored on the drive and the only one left is a “more clean” one. when I attempt to clean up further, upgrade or just about anything else, it will reboot with the “old version”.

I have tried to completely blow it away and reinstall the system via usb but the NUC wont boot to it for some reason. Im getting frustrated.

anyone have any ideas how to proceed? any points in a general direction would be amazing.

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like a hard drive problem.

Can u put the drive into a USB cradle when I did mine I had heaps of partitions on mine so I delete them all and started again

This was before I upgrade to M.2 NVMe PCIe 256G SSD

hmm. thats a good thought, and thanks. I dont have a sata adapter where I currently am, but I may try to load a live ubuntu and tinker around that way.

I got one just for HA made life easier

this whole machine is for HA, including the HD, but I dont remember if I fully blew away the partitions, which I think I should have done, but at this point, dont know

After booting up a live CD of ubuntu and taking a look at the HD, I could see it had many sectors corrupt and not repairable…

New HD and clean setup, and all is working well! Bad news, the backups wouldnt quite work, but I exported all my really needed configs and scripts and was not in too bad of a place for a clean install
