I’ve been using Nabu Casa for a while but recently it’s been playing up plus I’m getting a lot “unathorised access” attempt hits from them or via them somehow.
So, while i will still support the worthy NC cause, I have switched to Tailscale which was pretty easy and seems to function well.
However, i was not aware that TS takes over my phones’ internet connection fully and that any browsing data was visible to TS servers. I’m not even sure what or if that even matters but it does seem to eat my phone battery more and seems to interfere with non-home assistant traffic a bit - slower and not so reliable?
I was wondering if there was a way to only start TS when i use HA on remote or does this need doing manually or do we just run it 100%??
I am using the TS “serve” option, i presume that was correct?
It seems a bit easier on my laptop as TS has a control bar on/off switch plus i don’t take the laptop out much anyway.
Any advice or tips very welcome here, and much appreciated of course.
In the Android app under Settings there is a option called Split Tunneling. With that you can exclude any app that you don’t want to use with Tailscale. So if desired you could exclude everything except Home Assistant.
Yes, I am talking about the android app. The circle icon in the upper right corner is the settings button. The circle could have a picture, letter, or an icon.
I don’t understand what you are talking about. I’m using TS pretty extensively for about 8 years now on iPhone, Android and laptops. But I’ve never heard of split tunneling in TS (I do know what it is though with other VPN). I do know that you can run headscale on premise to avoid your data from going though TS cloud.
Also I don’t understand how PCO’s reply is the solution to your question?
For me at least the split tunnel was the answer - its isolated HA over TS from all other apps which then use the internet normally. So far it seems to be doing what i expected now, I have good access to HA remotely, plus all my other apps seem to be behaving normally again (bankng and car park payments were especially affected it seems)
