The map appears in the auto-generated dashboard without a possibility to turn it off. Would it be possible to add a checkbox somewhere in options which we could use to disable this?

Map it self is a Dashboard, what you show seems to be a Card in the Old OverView Dashboard, which you have now under “User Created” Dashboards ( In /Settings/Dashboards )
So You Have 2 OverView DashBoards in /Settings/Dashboards 1 under Build-in & 1 under User Created
The Answer to the User-Created You have in the Post you link to “Take Control”
The Built-in OverView-DashBoard Does Not contain a Map-Card
You might be New to HA, and therefore is confused about the Difference Of the old(Now User-Created) and the New, In “Build-in”
Please verify which OverView you refers to !
