Thread over Matter Bulbs wont connect

Hey there,

I am trying to connect some “Matter over Thread” Bulbs (Philips Hue Essential) to my Thread network.

ZBT-1 is running fine and Thread works, I have several ESP32-H2 connected via “ESPHome API over Thread” And it works like a charm. But no Matter over Thread devices so far. Today i got some Matter over Thread Bulbs and tried to connect them with no luck so far:

I connected my phone via 2.4 GHz to my Unifi Wifi-6 Pro AP. In network details, my Android phone reports both, a single IPv4 and three v6 addresses.

I enabled Bluetooth on my phone and made sure that HA Companion App is allowed to use Bluetooth.

Then I launched the Android HA Companion App, of course I made sure to “sync the Thread credentials”.

Then I went to “devices and services” within the app, clicked on “Matter” and chose “Add device”

After I manually put in the pairing code that is printed on the Bulb (QR Code never worked) the process starts:

Then it says “Serching for device” for a moment

and then “Connecting to device” for a longer moment.

Then it says “Generating Matter credentials”

and then "Checking connectivity to Thread network “ha-thread-7064” "

So far so good, it seems to connect to the bulb an even transmits the correct Thread network information to the bulb

And after that it says “Can’t reach device Make sure your Phone is connected to WiFi”

I tried it about 15 times with two different Android phones, both connected to 2.4. WiFi, no luck.

What am I doing wrong??

Android sometimes refuse to clear the credentials so new ones can be stored.
You then need to clear the Google Play cache.

Search the forum for the words “Google Play cache Matter”.
I have several posts with the guide on how to check and clear the credentials.

Thank you very much for the quick reply!
Tried it right after I saw your post. No joy.

Where might I find some log about the pairing process? Maybe this will give some insight on what went wrong…

The Matter server addon has the logs.
The problem is that the addon seems to spew out warnings and errors all the time, so it can be a bit difficult to find the one that matter.

Go to the addon page instead
