Every household with a damp basement knows this dilemma: hanging laundry down there just moves the moisture problem indoors, since a cool basement can’t hold as much water vapor as the warm air outside — and running a dehumidifier or fan on the wrong day wastes energy for nothing. I wanted Home Assistant to just tell me, each morning: hang it outside, use a specific room (and open its window or run the dehumidifier), use the tumble dryer, or wait a day because tomorrow’s forecast is much better.
Laundry Advisor scores outdoor drying conditions from your weather forecast (wind, humidity/dew point, sun, temperature, with a hard rain gate) and compares them against as many drying rooms as you configure. Each room gets its own temperature/humidity sensor, an optional wall/surface sensor for a mould guard, an optional window/door contact (so it knows whether airing the room is even possible), and optional fan/dehumidifier entities.
Features
- One sensor,
sensor.laundry_advisor— state is the recommendation (hang_outside_now,room_ventilate,room_dehumidify,dryer_recommended,wait_for_tomorrow,defer_wash,mold_risk, …), everything else (best room, best time window today, tomorrow/day-after outlook, per-room scores and reasoning) as attributes. - Any number of drying rooms, added/edited/removed from the integration’s own page — no YAML.
- Config flow + reconfigure flow for the weather source, outdoor sensors, dryer entity, and an “already washed” helper.
- Fully translated (English/German so far), follows the HA UI language.
Installation
Via HACS as a custom repository (not yet in the default store):
- HACS → ⋮ → Custom repositories →
https://github.com/chlctt/ha-laundry-advisor, category Integration. - Settings → Devices & Services → Add Integration → Laundry Advisor.
Matching Lovelace card, same way: laundry-advisor-card (category Dashboard) — score rings for today/tomorrow/day-after, best drying window, and a room list with status and hints (“airing helps”, “no window to air”, “no data” if a sensor drops out briefly).
Requirements: Home Assistant ≥ 2026.9, any weather entity that supports weather.get_forecasts.
Why I built it
It started as a personal itch: a washing cellar, a heating cellar, a workshop I could dry laundry in, and an outside line I obviously prefer when the weather allows it. I didn’t want to just check “is it raining” — wind and humidity/dew point matter just as much, and a room can look “dry enough” by relative humidity while still being a worse choice once you factor in whether airing it out would actually help (that only pays off if the outdoor air is measurably drier). It went through a few iterations — a template blueprint first, then a full custom integration once the blueprint’s limits (restart-required config, no dynamic rooms) got in the way.
Feedback wanted
This is a side project built around my own three rooms, so I’d genuinely like outside eyes on it:
- Does the scoring model hold up for your climate / drying setup, or does it lean on assumptions that don’t generalise?
- Anything missing from the config flow for your own rooms/sensors?
- Card layout/UX — is the room list clear, is anything missing you’d want to see at a glance?
Happy to hear what breaks, what’s confusing, or what you’d want differently.
