I just added my first Matter over Thread devices to my home (Nanoleaf BR30 Bulbs x6) and continue to run into reliability issues (i.e. some bulbs stop responding after working for a few days).
I’m trying to figure out what tools are best to pinpoint the issue prior to contacting Nanoleaf support. For example, I want to check that the bulbs are at least reachable over the Thread network when they stop responding. Any guidance is appreciated, I’m very technical so happy to dive deep.
So far I’ve completely reset and re-added the bulbs multiple times. I’ve tried adding to Nanoleaf app first and then Matter via Apple Home, then Apple Home first, and then Home Assistant first. They have so far worked best when added to Home Assistant first (via Matter) and then the Nanoleaf app, but as of today only 1 bulb remains controllable over Matter (Nanoleaf app using BT works fine).
For reference, here are the key specs of my setup:
Home Assistant OS 16.2 (Core 2025.10.3) running on a Raspberry Pi 4 (ethernet).
Apple TV 4K Gen 2 is the main TBR (ethernet)
Also have a Aqara G410 doorbell which acts as a TBR (wifi). Confirmed both are on the same thread network
Nanoleaf BR30 Matter Thread bulbs (x6) all in the same room as the Apple TV.
I don’t think there is a good answer, but here are a few things:
In Matter Integration under the device page for that device, go to the “Share Device” and click on the 3-dots, then click on “ping device”. If that fails, you may have a Thread networking problem.
If you had an OTBR, you could get some sense by looking at the OTBR logs to see if there are networking related errors, but since you have an Apple TV as the TBR, the only other thing I know of is to use the Matter Server Web UI
Matter Server Web UI - for your Nanoleaf node in endpoint 0 may support a Thread Diagnostic Cluster that itself may provide various error counts. I don’t have a suggestion for which ones may be helpful, but if you see lots of RxErrxxx or TxErrxxxx then may provide some clue.
As it turns out… after reading some suggestions to temporarily remove multiple TBRs from the network… I used my home firewall to block traffic to the Aqara doorbell. After a bit of time (I left for an hour) the bulbs started working again. So it looks like Aqara is not playing nice in the Thread network.
For now I’ve changed the Aqara to use a different Thread network and I’ll try and restrict traffic to just what is needed for the doorbell.
Maybe one day I’ll look at setting up an OTBR so I can have more insight.
