Trigger automation or scripts on power flow

Hi,

There are those in my house that never turn off an electric space heater. I would like to use a Z-Wave switch to detect when the space heater is on (Electric power flowing through the switch) which then starts a timer count down. So, say, after two hours the switch resets thereby turning off the heater but immediately powering back up so if someone is still there they can hit the button on the space heater and restart it (when loss of power happens the space heater resets).

I was looking at this:

Is this possible? Am I making sense?

Sure you can do this with any smart switch but it will have to have energy monitoring capability to see if the heater is on or in standby (to start the timer).

I don’t see that functionality listed anywhere in this product’s information. I’m almost certain it doesn’t. The non outdoor rated version does not have energy monitoring.

Do you need an outdoor rated switch?

Do you already have a zwave hub?

There are other cheaper options.

Yes, I already have Z-Wave up and running. No, I don’t need an outdoor switch but the heater is plugged into a power strip so that switch I linked was easier to hang off of the power strip. I can reconfigure how that all plugs together. That is the least of my problems.

I did some further searching and it looks like this would work?

Yep, that will work.
