Trying to automate Onkyo + Yamaha receivers

I have an Onkyo AVR and a Yamaha Stereo receiver, both network controllable. My goal is to repurpose the Yamaha as a basic amp for Zone 2, but it doesn’t have a 12v trigger or auto-on, and wouldn’t work with a relay switch because it goes to standby on power restore, so any kind of traditional connection seems impossible.

My idea is creating an HA automation that when the Onkyo Zone 2 is in use, it turns on the Yamaha and sets the correct input. Before I start down this rabbit hole, I wanted to ask if anyone has tried something like this.

A few concerns off the top of my head.
–Does the Onkyo integration report the on/off state of Zone 2 separately from the main unit? (documentation implies that it does)
–Would the trigger be reasonably fast enough? (Onkyo integrations shows it is Push, so hoping so)
–Can HA turn on the Yamaha from a standby state (it can from the Yamaha app, but not sure if that function is exposed to HA)

That sounds pretty basic and I would expect it to work fine.

I can not verify Onkyo because I don’t have one., but because you mentioned that the documentation indicates Zone2 support and a Push integration it should be fine. Push integrations are fast with updates.

The Yamaha integration can turn on receivers from standby. Note that if your receiver is supports MusicCast you might want to use the MusicCast integration instead.
