Turning off multicast packets in Ubuntu -- effect on HA?

I’m wondering whether HA will be affected if I turn off multicast packets on my Ubuntu 18.04 NUC running HA. The reason that I’d do that is that I’m having a ton of issues related to my Synology MR2200AC access points where the APs kept getting dropped and reconnected from the network. I spoke to a Synology developer who ran some diagnostics on my network, and he confirmed that my NUC was sending a ton of multicast packets out which was knocking the access points offline.

I’m technical, but clearly not technical enough to understand the data packets being sent by the NUC. What I’m wondering is whether HA will be adversely affected if I were to turn the multicast packets off.

I had been using Room Assistant which does have Multicast DNS, but I turned that feature off after consulting with the developer.

For HA, I’m using Simplisafe, Belkin Wemo, Philips Hue, PS4, Harmony remotes, Zwave (through Vera), and Amazon Echos. I don’t know if that matters, but figured it would be better to know what I’m relying on in case that affects the analysis.

Thanks in advance and happy to provide more details if it’s helpful.

The better solution is to get an access point that works.

Hi,

run(ning) into same issue having Synology RT2600AC + 2xMR2200AC in mesh (wired) config.
This I saw may help:

  • make sure you are not running EspHome
  • disable discovery: into HA

other little helps:

  • if you are running shelly custom component disable discovery: option into that component
  • disable default_config: enabling every component by hand except zeroconf: and sspd:

also in my case helped to reduce BLE packets around the house, I was running:

  • 2x happy bubbles --> kept alive
  • 2xRPI3 with miflora to mqtt server --> disabled
  • 1 ESP32 with BLE tracker turned on --> kept alive

situation is not ideal though, I am in touch with Synology support as well: I am starting having doubts their multicast implementation isn’t ideal?

@mspinolo Thank you very much. You should also take a look on your network at any powerline adapters if you have them. They make a lot of noise and it turned out that they were a major source of the constant outages. It was one powerline adapter, and when removed, it calmed the issues way down.

Hi,

I don’t have any power line adapter: let’s see if synology support can help but they do not look properly skilled :frowning:
