Hmm, I didn’t see that one coming. Leak sensors under every appliance and every water-using fixture. One sensor went off, but couldn’t find it at first. Turns out puppy had found it & carried it away, and the detected moisture was dog saliva. Good thing automatic whole-house water shutoff wasn’t yet enabled.

Defective sensor. Should only have triggered when the puppy took a leak on it. That’s why it’s called a leak sensor

I had an instance where my TV suddenly started changing inputs, channels and volume. I have a Node Red automation that sets the inputs when the AVR is turned on and suspected something was going crazy with it. Went to grab the remote to turn it off and couldn’t find it. Turns out the dog had taken the remote out into the yard and was gnawing it. It was a good thing I noticed it and that it was still in range - the remote was destroyed but at least the dog didn’t eat the batteries.
Anyone else have any crazy stories about home automation failures?
Not crazy really, but I found out that my server that runs HA has a lower temperature limit. At early morning in the middle of winter. The server lives in my garage.
I had to borrow my wife’s hairdryer to heat up the server enough to have it start back up again.

Another instance:
I have an automation that detects water flow using a pulse meter for the whole house. If no one is home (based on our phones) and the water flow is more than normal (e.g. ice maker) it sounds a siren and shuts the water off to the house. Well my sister-in-law, who’s phone isn’t part of Home Assistant was quite surprised when taking a shower that the water stopped and sirens started going off. Luckily I saw the alert on my phone and realized what had happened and was able turn the water back on remotely.
