Update Frequency of Integrations and Apps

Has anyone else notice a big uptick in the frequency of upates to common Integrations and Apps in Home Assistant the past few months? It feels like every day lately there’s updates waiting to be applied. I appreciate all the development work everyone puts in of course to keep things updated, I’m just a bit mifted as to why it feels like the frequency of updates has gone up 5-10x lately for a myraid of different HA Apps?

Yes it has.

Agree that we can appreciate all the hard work everyone is puting into developments and make HA better.

However there is a big downer… I find this becoming more work for the induvudual user. More risk and instablity when applications and integratins are constantly moving… and loosing sync with other functions.

These days I need to run a “development office” to keep my own, parents, friends HA setups. And its too much time. Starting to look for something that need less work and attention. I though home automations was suppose to be helping to do less work at home. Not in this case.

No not really. It’s about the same as always for me. One update every couple of days on average.

I agree, no more updates than there always has been. Often seems to be a bunch of updates in beta week. But mostly it’s just a quick click and all is sorted.

If you keep adding new integrations and HACS stuff, you are going to get more updates just because you have more stuff. If I get an update for something I am no longer using I delete it. You can end up with a lot of stuff you tried but ended up not using.

Odd how that differs from me. I’m defo not installing lots of new Apps or Integrations my number will have been static for many months, but the uptick in frequency of updates for me has certainly changed, as it sounds another user at least has also experienced here.

I don’t know how I compare to most other HA users, for added context I have 19 Apps and 30 Integrations. Thanks for chiming in with your exp too @anon11644107 :+1:

This is such a vibe thing it’s hard to tell. I don’t feel like there have been more updates, but I can’t say that means anything since what I have installed and what the OP has installed may be very different. Where I tend to perceive spikes is when there is a breaking change in HA that lots of my integrations use. In that case I do see a spike because they all need updates to keep working.

I can sympathise, I’m getting a bit tired of the updates and my usual procedue before them (I like to manually do a backup and wait for that to upload off-site before I update things) thankfully @sabeechen 's plugin makes that an absolute breeze

I actually had a Tailscale update break something siginicant for me the other day, after an update it regressed and changed a setting I previously had configured, which had a knock on effect of breaking another link I had setup (“Remote Home-Assistant”) which linked to Home Assistant installs across two sites, that had worked flawlessly for a couple of years until that Tailscale update broke things

When it comes to updates I feel like:

  • They are important and I want to do them to maintain good security.
  • I like to oversee them to manually backup first, and then see if anything breaks post-update. I have auto backups in place (weekly).
  • With increased frequency comes increased hassle of doing that manually (maybe I should just switch my backups to just be daily and not trigger manual ones before updating).
  • With increased frequency I often worry that if I’m a early adopter of the update then something unknown could be wrong with it. Easy to say they’re tested and that shouldn’t happen, I’d agree statistically it hasn’t really happened to me over the years but then there is the one recent Tailscale case mentioned above.

Hi,

The frequency of updates you experience really depends on the integrations and apps you use, as well as any backend systems, servers, or APIs connected to them.

For example, if a manufacturer decides to change the API content or a timer, a developer needs to respond to or anticipate that change in their integration/app → an update will be required.

And yes! Home Assistant is, and will remain, a system that requires maintenance. The scale and impact of that maintenance is determined by the size and complexity of your Home Assistant setup.

My tip: always read the release notes and update when you have some time to check that everything is working properly afterwards.

Good option!
