Upgrade RPI 4 to RPI 5 using RPI 4 backup of HA?

I am finally upgrading my HA RPI from a RPI 4 to a 5 and also adding a “HA Connect ZBT-1”. My question is: after I install the latest version of HA on the RPI 5 with the ZBT-1 (not used on the 4) can I use the existing RPI4 backup on the RPI5 that should get all my existing modules, YAML… into 5? I hope!
Thanks

Yes, backup on Pi4, restore on Pi5

Backup is platform agnostic.

Just backup install new fresh using proper new install instructions and when it’s up - restore your backup…

Just turn your old box off when you start the restore. If restore works (and it should) just don’t turn old back on. If it breaks kill new and start over. :sunglasses:

Just did a yellow CM4 to CM5 upgrade last week so can confirm the current version works well.

Better still, with a Nabu Casa subscription, when you sign into your account HA automatically offers to restore your cloud backup.

The migration of radio is different - if you are moving between USB coordinators, upgrade the CPU first, then the ZigBee coordinator. The integration basically copies the radio hardware MAC over meaning no repair of devices is needed. There’s a post from me on this process when upgrading Yellow.

(CM5 is noticeably faster however 8Gb RAM for large ESPhome compiles was utter overkill. Usual usage is 1.5Gb.)

True, but it can go over 2GB at times, so (at least) 4GB is a fair decision.

Agreed.

It also depends on what RPi stock is available - a CM5 lite (radios but no disk, use NVMe) is easier to get, but the more expensive high RPi RAM models are not always the last to sell out (suspect the 8Gb RAM is bought for more VMs).

There’s less RPi5 variants than CM5 so easier to find.

Thanks for the tip. 8GB Pi was all they had available, and like Solar panels, you can never have enough.

Yeah - I moved the original CM4 to a random eBay carrierboard (Waveshare CM4-NANO-B) so my justification for the overkill 8Gb was “future reuse”!

That, and like you’ve seen, the most spendy RPi5 models sell out last.

(BTW - the official RPi5 active cooler is good (passive for the Yellow CM5), the battery RTC backup module perhaps isn’t activated on HAOS, and a NVMe hat works but only with some drives.)
