USA procured sensors, switches & controllers to be used in UK

I’m getting confused. I am looking to set up a Home Assistant system in a flat I just purchased in Northern Ireland. It’s looking to me that for ZigBee stuff, the frequency for sensors and dongles are the same in the US as well as products i see from sites in the UK.

Is that also true for ZWave? The products are much cheaper purchased here if they really are the same and wont be a problem over there

Z-Wave products from one region will only work with a controller from the same region. If your controller is EU region then US products will not be compatible. The regions are using different radio frequencies.

You can change the controller region (frequency) in the software (700 and 800 series controllers), so it’s physically possible to use US devices in EU simply by changing the controller region. I would not recommend doing so though.

In many countries radio frequency usage is regulated and it may be illegal to use unauthorized frequencies, e.g. US Z-Wave devices in EU. If you choose to use US devices in an incompatible region long term, if caught you’ll be at risk of whatever legal penalties there are in your country, e.g. monetary fines, imprisonment, etc. So that just depends on how strict Northern Ireland is. I wouldn’t really recommend testing that though.

Thanks @freshcoast That was what i thought for Z-Wave. But do you have a ZigBee bot sibling to address the ZigBee question?
