Use one device for on/off and another for dimmer on same entity?

Hi! I have two wifi LED ceiling lights capable of dimmer and colour change. The ceiling lights do NOT have an input for a physical button.

My son always misplace the remotes controlling the light. I want to use a existing light switch to turn on/off the ceiling lights using a Shelly wifi relay. I can turn on or off the ceiling lights and manually dim or change the colours using HASS. It’s not perfect in any way but seems to work OK for now.

However, I now have a Shelly device in HASS turning the lights on/off and the wifi ceiling lights controlling the brightness. Is it possible to build a virtual dummy device in HASS where the on/off is controlled by the Shelly relay and the rest is controlled by the other device?

You can set up a Template light to combine the two.

If the Shelly device has the ability to be set to detached mode, so that the relay always stays on, that usually gives a better user experience than de-powering smart bulbs.

Thank you! I’ll look into the template light feature. Also great advice on using the Shelly in detached mode as a hard wired remote, I don’t know why I did not think about this instead of using it to turn off the power.
