Using Home Assistant with Raspberry PI configured as a WiFi AP

Hello Everyone!

Im deploying Hass on a boat, so I’ve been trying to minimise the hardware required as it’s a battery/solar-powered home.

Hass will be running on a Pi 4. To get the install on the internet for remote monitoring, I’d like to use a USB 4G/5G dongle, and then to communicate with a few ESPHome devices, I would like to use WiFi.

Will Home Assistant OS allow me to configure the dongle for WAN access and use the Raspberry Pis onboard WiFi as an access point for communicating with ESP32 devices?

For actual internet access, the occupant will just use their phone / tethering. The Pi WiFI only needs to talk to a handful of ESP devices.

Any tips and tricks for configuring a super minimal setup would be greatly appreciated.

There’s an addon for the Wi-Fi access point part:

Not sure about the 4G WAN access.

Probably a lot simpler to just buy a small wi-fi router / modem.
