Using trigger zone.home with activated VPN (problem?)

Hi there,

i’ve got an seemingly unusual problem:

I use an automation that activates/deactivates an alarm system, whenever i leave/enter the zone.home.

That automation works well, BUT  I also have my iPhone setup to establish a VPN connection back home, when it leaves the home wifi network.

It seems, that whenever i leave the house, the automation is triggered correctly, but when i us the phone somewhere, the VPN is triggering the “entered zone.home” and shortly after that the “left zone.home”.

So it seems to me, that the HA app or HA is not strictly relying on the GPS signal but also using some “network-wifi-thing”? Is there any chance to restrict this to gps only?

Thank you guys, as i know, this is probably an edge case…

Hello cpo,

What do you have set-up in ‘devices to track’?
Open your Home Assistant instance and show a list of your people.
I have there a GPS based and a local IP on the network based sensor myself so that when home it stays home. Not leaving when the GPS shuts off or floats out of range due to low signal.
If you have only the GPS based sensor here, then is should only use that. I say should because we are likely dealing with IOS and the Companion app as well, so who knows with those.

Hi, @Sir_Goodenough, thanks for the help.

i’ve three devices in there: one iPhone and two iPads. The iPads usually stay home. So that should be only devices using GPS.

The “leaving zone → arming alarm” automations works perfect, when i leave the house and having only the iPhone im my pocket.
