[Version 1.8.0] A ring tells you now. It doesn't tell you what today looked like

Every solar card I’ve built or used has the same hole in it. The ring is honest about this instant — producing 2.1 kW, drawing 400 W — and says nothing about whether the morning was any good, or when the battery actually carried the house. To answer that you leave the dashboard and open the Energy panel, and by then you have stopped glancing and started investigating.

v1.8.0 puts the answer under the ring: 24 bars, one per hour, stacked into self-consumption, grid import and export, in the same colours the ring uses. It reads the hourly statistics Home Assistant already records for those sensors — no new entity, no template sensor, no configuration. If the statistics aren’t there (fresh install, purged recorder) the card renders exactly as it did in 1.7, and the Diagnostics section of the settings panel says why rather than leaving an empty box.

The same release fixes a smaller version of the same problem for covers. A card that reads “62%” makes you convert a number into a picture; a card that is 62% filled from the top is the picture. It’s read-only — the slider and the 44 px touch targets are untouched, which matters here because most of these dashboards live on a wall tablet.

Context, if you haven’t seen the project: it’s a single hand-written HTML panel rather than a Lovelace layout, installed through HACS, which discovers your rooms from the areas you already assigned in Home Assistant. Desktop and phone, Italian and English, MIT.

There is a demo mode that runs straight from a file with fake data, so you can see whether it’s worth installing before you install it. If something is wrong on your setup, reproducing it on the demo and sending the URL tells me more than a screenshot does.
