Very Lost. Very Confused. (Home Assistant Voice - ESPhome)

UPDATE: I was able to find help on Discord. Problem is now solved.

My Home Assistant Voice (preview edition) arrived this morning. I followed the instructions at Getting Started – Home Assistant Voice Preview Edition and I also found a YouTube video (https://youtu.be/KDvHNYRLSuI) that went through it step by step.

I had no problem connecting the device to my wifi and at the end it asks me if I want to setup ESPhome and to press ok. In both the YouTube video I watched and also the instructions on the website it switches to something that looks like a setup wizard but that is not what happens for me.

It asks me for a HOST and shows me a prefilled port (6053). I have searched on this forums for similar people asking about this and found some replies that still don’t help me at all. I am unsure of what to put here even more confused as to why in the tutorials I watched this doesn’t seem to happen.

I have used FING to find some IP addresses of various devices but none of those IPs seem to work at all. I thought it was asking me for the IP of the Preview Edition device itself and I tried what I thought that was but it also didn’t work. It keeps asking me about a YAML file (make sure it has api line or something to that effect).

I am very lost and I am new to setting this up which is why I tried to find as many sources of information/tutorials as I could. None of them seem to show the screen I am getting. The explanations I found on the forum are also confusing for me and maybe this is just too technical for me to understand which I can accept.

I am just wondering if anyone can help walk me through what the cause of this is and how to resolve it and what the host is supposed to be. Is there some other file I need to edit? I followed the instructions exactly. I have reset the device multiple times and tried the setup again but the same thing happens.

I have found 2 different topics related to this on the forum (one that including using FING to find specific IPs etc) but neither topic was able to resolve the confusion I am having and one topic very clearly stated that this wasn’t a help forum so perhaps I shouldn’t be asking for tech help here but I thought I would try anyway.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Basic question: do you have Home Assistant installed somewhere (it is listed in the requirements, but I saw no mention of it in your description)?

I have not done this, but I am guessing it is looking for your installation of Home Assistant and it isn’t finding it so it is asking you where it is.

I have home assistant software installed and running locally on my UGreen NAS.

Did you give it that address?

The instructions in the link (not the video) seem clear. Where did your results first start differing from what is shown in the instructions?

Exactly which of the few paths did you choose to follow?

That does not work either.

I explained everything that I did. I guess this is just not something I am capable of doing. Thank you anyway.

This is likely the IP address of the host computer running Home Assistant. You would enter something like 192.168.1.57:6053

It might work with homeassistant.local:6053, but not all routers will handle mdns.

FYI, I am awaiting my voice preview hsortly.

yes I have tried that ip several times and I get some kind of YAML error. But doesn’t connect to that ip

Be more specific if you want help. “Some kind” isn’t saying anything, post the actual error message and your YAML code.

I don’t think I will be able to get assistance here as I’ve been searching for a similar issue and I have found people asking the same question I am but not really receiving any actual help (that I can understand). It seems the Home Assistant community isn’t very newbie friendly and I understand that this isn’t a Help Support forum or anything like that (as has been stated several times here before). I will check Discord groups and see if I can find further assistance or I will just forego using Voice Assist. It just really seems like you need a lot of technical expertise for this kind of setup.

Thank you for your help.

I hope you will have more success with yours. It seems like an amazing piece of tech, just not for me.

Thanks for your help.

No one here can read minds, give details!

Is that conclusion because no-one resolved your problem within one hour from your original post about hardware that 99% of members have no personal experience (yet)?

Onboarding video

Is that HAOS in a VM or a container installation in Docker? The latter is a more advanced installation type that does not allow ESPHome to run as an addon. That will make things a bit harder and may explain why you don’t get the same wizard. The container setup is generally less likely to be explained in videos. It is an install type intended for experienced users who know their way around containers. Not that many users use it that way, so most are unable to help.

No that’s from searching this forum for a while and reading responses to similar questions or specific questions that I am looking to have answered. There was actually quite a long thread dedicated to this very topic and it was stated rather directly that this is not a help forum and no one here is under any obligation to help anyone with tech questions.

In general it doesn’t seem like the best place to get detailed help or at least not the kind of specific or detailed help that I may require.

As I stated earlier this is pretty technical and I’m not really sure how to answer this. I didn’t install it myself, my roommate did and he’s equally confused about the esphome host question himself and he’s pretty technical. Since I’m not technical enough to even be able to answer your question, I don’t think I would even be able to understand an answer even if one was presented here.

There may be other things going on on my end that I’m not sure how to articulate as well. I don’t think this particular piece of tech is going to be the best option for me under these circumstances.

I appreciate your trying to help. Thank you.

Yes I have followed several of these onboarding videos but none of them present the problem I am having upon connecting the device to my wifi network.

Thank you though.

If I am right (and I am guessing a bit here) the installation you use is not the beginner friendly one. If that is true, You are expected to install ESPHome yourself, and tell Home Assistant where it was installed.

If that is way over your head, then running Home Assistent on your NAS instead of for instance a Home Assistant Green is not for you. You will keep running into problems like these I’m afraid.
